The pharmaceuticals distributor Farmaceutica Remedia, controlled by the businessman Valentin Tarus, budgeted revenues of 60 mil. euro for 2012, up to 20% to the last year.
“The financial situations related to the year 2011 are not ready yet. Farmaceutica Remedia will certainly end the year 2011 with a turnover slightly above 50 milions euro”, said Robert Peloiu, General Manager of the company.
He also mentioned that they considered the exchange rate of 4,35 lei/euro for the budget implementation ”according to the opinions of the financial analysts from the major banks ”.
This year the company proposed to achieve a net profit over 5 millions lei. In the first nine months of 2011, the company reported a net profit of approx. 4,1 millions lei (approx. 1 mil. euro), representing 39% increase comparing to the similar results of 2010, according to the information received from the Bucharest Stock Exchange.
Remedia is listed on Bucharest Stock Exchange with a market cap in value of 21,2 millions lei (5 millions euro).
“The investments budget proposed for 2012 will exceed 2,5 millions lei. We will invest in the existent pharmacies (…), we will open new pharmacies by the acquisition of their trade fund, if the present law will not change in order to allow the liberalization of the pharmacies openings, we will purchase new means of transportation adapted tot the present requirements (…)”, said Robert Peloiu.
The opening of new pharmacies must respect the applicable regulations. The most important criteria is the demographic one, due tot he fact that the maximum number of units from a city is established according tot he law and is already achieved. Therefore, the expansion of the pharmacies chain can be done only by the acquisition of the existent pharmacies.
Many independent pharmacies are for sale due to their liquidity problems caused by the fact that the State reimburses the receipts after 300 days.
A difficult year
Considering Remedia turnover, the distribution activity generates almost 60%, being developed through the 8 logistic centers (from Bucureşti, Deva, Timişoara, Braşov, Craiova, Iaşi, Piteşti and Târgu-Mureş), according to the information from the 9 months report 2011. Approx. 40% from turnover is generated bythe sales of the own chain of pharmacies, Remedia, according to the same sourse.
The general manager of the company said that currently Farmaceutica Remedia owns directly or indirectly 60 pharmacies, 7 pharmacies being indirectly owned by a number of companies 95% controlled by the company.
“The pharmaceutical market in 2012 will evolve both as volume, without exceeding 10%, as difficulty. The challenges of the year 2012 in the pharmaceutical market twill be related mainly to the margins decrease, increase of the payment terms when the State pays its debits and the risk of bankruptcy of the independent pharmacies causing the increase of the risk of insufficiency in the collection by the pharmaceutical distributors (…)” said Robert Peloiu.
Market returns to double-digit growth
The most recent estimations regarding the evolution of the pharmaceutical market, amounting to 2,5 billion euro, shows over 10% and are realized by IMS Health research company.
According to the available information most of the pharmaceutical companies expect a turnover increase in 2012.

The second edition of the Bilateral Pharma Forum Austria-Romania took place on 17-20 November, 2011 in Vienna. The event was organized under the auspices of the Romanian Pharmacy Owners’ Association and the Austrian Pharmacists Association, with the special support from the Honorary Consulate of Romania in Salzburg.

The 2nd Bilateral Pharma Forum Austria-Romania was organized beside another important event, 150 years anniversary of the Austrian Pharmacists Association, which has been celebrated on 17 November, 2011 at Gartenpalais Liechtenstein, Vienna.
During a time when money is expensive, and the entrepreneurs do not have any resources to increase salaries, the rewarding of the employees with shares should be the cheapest form of motivation. Unfortunately, the confusing legislation does not help them in any way.
“This way, we tried to attract and keep them in our company”, explains the owner of Remedia. “And it worked”, he says. People did not leave and, moreover, began to be much more careful about costs. On a market of drugs distribution where money cashes with difficulties and in delay, choosing the right clients and avoiding the bad payers has become a priority. Especially as one million euro was lost because of the clients who became insolvent and for whom Remedia is required to establish provisions.
Even so, last year the company managed to have a net profit of 1.8 million lei corresponding to a turnover which exceeded 182 millions lei. Keeping the employees in the company and the increase of their performance was not the only reason why the drugs distributor decided to give shares to the employees who own now 4% of the company.
“The company suffers from the lack of liquidity on the stock market and therefore we intend to increase the number of freely tradable shares” said Tarus, who is willing even to reduce his part of shares. He did it again in 2007 when it sold 20% of the company with four millions euro.
Due to the low liquidity, and also to the law governing the capital market, it is very difficult for our company to collect shares from the stock exchange. “The companies who buy back their own shares are discriminated for two reasons” complains Robert Peloiu, General Manager of the company.
Quantitatively, you can not buy more than 25% from the average of the securities traded during the last 30 days and can not offer a higher price than the previous day’s closing. For this reason, even now the company is struggling to gather all the shares for the second repurchase program approved more than a year ago. As most of the companies who use such programs in order to motivate and reward the employee performance, Farmaceutica Remedia stopped only to the managers. “It will take time before we start to give shares to all our employees” believes Valentin Tarus, the owner of the company. Because it’s about trust, mentality and education.
The lack of financial education is seen also by Daniela Necefor, Managing Partner of Total Business Solutions recruitment company, as one of the reasons for the companies to offer non-financial bonuses only to the top management. “The idea is that anyway the others do not know what shares mean”, she sais. Secondly it is an attempt to differentiate the motivational package. ”It is like a performance bonus”, explains Daniela Necefor, which means negotiating directly with the employee and clearly specify in the contract the redemption conditions in case of leaving the company. She remembers that the last years they had salary packages which offered shares.
Not this year, although it is a known fact that the managers shares reward happens more often when there is little money, like now, and when the economic situation is unfavorable.
The formula found by most of the entrepreneurs to select the employees who do their job very well from the less efficient ones was the decrease of the fixed salary in favor of the variable part or some other benefits. If three years ago the fix part exceeded 70%, today this is under 60%.
In these difficult times, employees have begun to appreciate more the stability of the company and the management ability to continue the development and less the salary growth.
Our company registered for the first 9 months of the year a turnover increase of 12% and 40% gross profit increase comparing to the same period of the last year. These results are showing an evolution above the general average profit market , which has constantly characterized our company’s evolution during the last years.
Therefore, according to the Report Q3 2011 of the Board of Administration the nett turnover for the first 9 months of the year 2011 was of 144,6 mil lei and the gross profit for the same period exceeded 5 mil lei.

“Cetate Deva” 24 athletes aerobic gymnastic team, traditionally supported by FARMACEUTICA REMEDIA S.A., won the 3rd place in the top of the clubs at the Aerobic Gymnastic Championship from Constanta, at a distance of only 2 points from Farul Constanta and UNEFS Bucharest teams.
Delia Lacataru, member of the National Aerobic Gymnastic Seniors Teams of Romania, 2010 Trio and Group world champion in China, with an impressive record in 2009 - European champion and vice-champion in Cehia and 2008 world vice-champion in Germany, won the 2nd place in the pairs contest. Recently Delia won also the 1st place in the groups contest at the Hungarian International Championships. This year festival edition was opened by „George Enescu” Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Christian Schultz (Austria), with the extraordinary participation of Patricia Seymour, soprano.
Among the special guests of the 10th edition of JOHANN STRAUSS International Festival were Dr. Thomas Aigner – Director of the Music Collection of the Library of the City of Vienna, the ARTMUSIK Quartet, conducted by Iosif Ion Prunner, Adrian Ovidiu Stoica (piano) and representatives of JOHANN STRAUSS Societies.
JOHANN STRAUSS International Festival, already a traditional event dedicated to the waltz lovers from our country, took place in Bucharest during 14-21 August 2011. The last two editions of the festival were held in Bucharest at “Cotroceni” National Museum, the 7th edition in Cluj-Napoca and the last edition in Timisoara.
One of the most awarded U.S. specialists in dentistry, Prof. Dr. Gregori M. Kurtzman, held in Bucharest on June 3rd, 2011 a theoretical and practical course on “Modern methods in adhesive restorations”. The lecture was structured in two parts, a theoretical and a practical one. The theoretical section included general considerations concerning the restoration of the endodontically treated teeth, the presentation of the news in etch materials and considerations regarding the report between endodontics and implants.
In the second part of the lecture, the doctors attended a workshop held in the offices of the dental faculty, where they practiced the methods of direct restoration with second-generation resin and the use of dual outlet composites, all this under the direct supervision of Professor Kurtzman.

FARMACEUTICA REMEDIA S.A. in partnership with BAXTER sustained the organization and the participation to the 16th International Meeting of Danubian League against Thrombosis and Haemorrhagic Disorders (DLTH) which took place in Timisoara during May 19-21, 2011.
For the first time in the history of the Danubian League, Romania has been chosen as a location for organizing this event of major importance for our society. A group of American students in Law and Business from St. John’s University (NY), Peter J. Tobin Business College, visited and made an experience exchange at FARMACEUTICA REMEDIA S.A., retail drugs distributor, as part of „Transactions in emerging markets” course.
The visit of the American team of students lasted for one week between 6 and 13 March 2011. The students, accompanied by two of their teachers, Christopher J. Borgen, Associate Dean for International Studies and Mark Mayer, Deputy Law teacher in St. John Law University and President of the Romanian-American Chamber of Commerce, started their visit with a tour of company facilities. In order to increase the access to treatment and therefore the quality of life of these patients, FARMACEUTICA REMEDIA S.A. sustains the patients associations to increase the budgetary allocation for this disease, becoming a traditional friend of the Romanian Association of Hemophilia.
FARMACEUTICA REMEDIA S.A., in partnership with Baxter, was one of the main sponsors of the Symposium organized by the Romanian Association of Hemophilia on the occasion of the International Hemophilia Day on April 15, 2011.
The exact number of patients with hemophilia from Romania is not known, du to the lack of a national register. According to the patient associations and authorities, there are approximately between 1000 and 2000 people suffering from this rare disease.
It is known that the treatment of a patient in Romania is about 0.5 units per capita, while the average is about 2.2 units.
For comparison, in Hungary, a country with a socio-economic level similar to Romania, 3% from the National Insurance House budget is allocated to hemophilia.
In other words, treatment is 7.1 units per capita, a figure that places Hungary on the fourth place in Europe.
All these information were presented at the Symposium organized by the Romanian Association of Hemophilia at the International Hemophilia Day.
On this occasion, the organizers announced the establishment of a Twinning Program partnership with a Hungarian Association. This “brotherhood” helps both organizations, one to learn and the other to share their experience, so that the Romanian hemophilia patients could improve their access to the treatment and, consequently, the quality of life.
Together with the representatives of the Romanian and Hungarian patients, the symposium was attended by Prof. Dr. Margit Serban, honorary President of the Romanian Hemophilia Association.
Mrs. Prof. Dr. Margit Serban showed her full support to the patients as a physician and expressed the hope that the Hungarian model will be also implemented by the Romanian Ministry of Health officials.
The Counselor of the Health Minister, Dr. Andrew Kozma, mentioned the intentions of the Ministry to allocate more founds to for patients with hemophilia and to improve their access to treatment through the availability of cheaper but equally effective products.

Logistic development – FARMACEUTICA REMEDIA S.A. announces the launch of the logistic development project by opening a new distribution centre covering a 8.725 mp area, with functions and added value for the customer service processes at the level of TQM and GDP international standards.
FARMACEUTICA REMEDIA S.A., with the support of Mr. Valentin-Norbert TARUS, President of the Board of Administrators, continued its involvement in the series of artistic events by sponsoring the “Portraits of Mountains” painting and sculpture exhibition, with the occasion of the International Retezat Mountains Art Symposium,which took place at the National Geology Museum in Bucharest, during April 6-21, 2011.
The event represents a balance of artistic experiences accumulated over the five editions and presents to the public a selection of works, most of them paintings, created by the participants to the Symposium, students of “George Enescu” Arts University Iasi and and Chisinau Arts University, under the coordination of Lector Univ.Dr. Cristian Ungureanu (“George Enescu” Arts University).

Another three beneficiaries of Remedia Scholarship were the gold winners of the trio contest of the 2009 International Aerobic Gymnastics which took place in Borovets, Bulgaria, one of them being the winner of the trio contest.

For those who wish to understand the mountain through painting, FARAMCEUTICA REMEDIA S.A. organized the 4th Edition of the International Student Painting-Sculpture Camp from Carnic during August 15-29, 2009, under the coordination of Mr. Cristian Ungureanu – Univ. Assistant in “George Enescu” Arts University.
The participants, students from “George Enescu” Arts University and from the Academy of Music, Theater and Plastic Arts Chisinau, showed their artistic talent in a natural wonderful environment from Retezat Mountains. September 7-13, 2008, Cluj-Napoca – musical event which became a tradition in the cultural life of our country, sponsored by FARMACEUTICA REMEDIA S.A. and the Romanian Association of Waltz Lovers, a reconfirmation of our company implication in the Romanian cultural-artistic life.

July 2010 – the event included for the first time the cultural projects “S.O.S. Castelul” and “Dracula Nights at Corvinilor Castle”.
